Listening to Darren Smith, the new Slipstream Group Coach has a terrific success story from the firm he has recently sold out of. In this business, even the receptionist owned a small equity holder. The sense of ownership in business often leads to more dedicated team members and commerciality from staff you’d never expect it from.
In a different business, I recall an employee share scheme shareholder cutting back the half a dozen morning teas a month to one – because the costs all added up. The same employee would later track paper usage by reams to reduce printing costs. These simple, minor cost savings in the scheme of business, do add up – but more importantly it was the mindset.
What can you do to encourage your team to think like a business owner? Should there be a wider pool of equity owners?
